Let The Games Begin – Vancouver 2010

by admin in Mexico

Today is a special day for all of us on Ocean Blue II.

As we bob around at anchor here in Beautiful Puerto Escondido, Mexico – Our Hearts are in British Columbia.  For today is the opening of the 2010 Winter Olympics, proudly hosted by our home Province, British Columbia & our Country Canada!

Johanna & I both remember on July 2, 2003  when it was announced that the Winter Olympics were coming to British Columbia.  I remember us celebrating, so proud  & then talking about our kids,  at that time they were ages 5 & 3.  We  talked about how they would be 11 & 9 when the Olympics came to town, we couldn’t even imagine we told each other.

Imagine is a neat word – the definition is, “If you imagine something, you think about it and your mind forms a picture or idea of it.”

Well at that time, we didn’t imagine us sitting here in Mexico.  Life has been good to us, we are not only celebrating the Olympics together here on our good ship Ocean Blue II, we are celebrating almost 15 months spent in Mexico.

With that said, we just raised our brand new Canadian Flag which is now flapping madly in the wind – a boat load of proud Canadians!

I will wrap up this post with some words from our Prime Minister, Stephen Harper.

There’s no need for Canadians to apologize for being proud of their country and its athletes, Harper said.

“We will ask the world to forgive us this time, this uncharacteristic outburst of patriotism and pride, our pride of being part of a country that is strong, confident and stands tall among the nations.”

“This truly is British Columbia’s golden moment,” Harper said. “And it is also Canada’s time to shine.”

The entire country thanks and admires B.C. for hosting the most ambitious sporting event in Canadian history, he said.

“Events like these have a significance beyond themselves. They serve as historic markers of where a community is going and of how its people see themselves.”

“While British Columbia will have on display during these Games everything of which you are so proud, the thing that will be the most visible, once our national teams and athletes appear on the stage, will be B.C.’s greatest attribute and its greatest asset, and that is that British Columbia is part of Canada.”
